Orty

This well-known kaolin mine of southern Bohemia was founded at 19th century, J.Hardtmuth used it's kaolin to manufacture whiteware. Thus, a mostly rectangular grid of lofty arched up to 6 meters high passages driven in Secondary freshwater lake sandstones has came into existence. Alcoves for miner's lamps, traces of mining tools, remains of different height levels and modern reliefs made by talented visitors may be found there. The mine is protected as a Natural Monument.
